Asheville Flood Cleanup for River, Creek and Runoff Water

Flood cleanup in Asheville is heavy work. When the French Broad, the Swannanoa or a neighborhood creek comes into a house, it brings mud, debris and whatever it washed through upstream. We get that out, remove what can't be saved, disinfect the structure and dry it so it can be rebuilt.

When officials say it's safe to go back, call (828) 555-0115.

What Helene Showed

In September 2024, heavy rain from a system ahead of Helene soaked the mountains first. Then Helene's rainbands arrived over saturated soil. The French Broad at Asheville rose past its 1916 record, and the Swannanoa at Biltmore Village crested 27.33 feet, more than six feet above its previous high. The National Weather Service also documented hundreds of debris flows across the North Carolina mountains. Homes far from the main rivers flooded from smaller streams and hillside runoff.

Floodwater Rules

We treat all river and creek floodwater as contaminated:

  • drywall and insulation are removed above the waterline
  • soaked carpet, pad and upholstered pieces go to the curb
  • hard surfaces, framing and slabs are cleaned and disinfected before drying
  • crawl spaces and basements are mucked out and their insulation removed

The Cleanup, Room by Room

  1. Pump out remaining water and shovel out mud.
  2. Strip ruined materials and haul them out.
  3. Wash and disinfect what stays.
  4. Run drying equipment and record moisture at fixed points each day.
  5. Confirm the framing is dry before closing walls.

We photograph every room before and after and keep a moisture log for your insurer or for disaster assistance paperwork.

Rebuilding in a Flood-Prone Spot

If your home sits near a river or creek, ask the City about floodplain requirements before you rebuild finishes. Moving outlets, appliances and the water heater higher can limit damage next time.

In Helene, wind did as much harm as water in many neighborhoods; see our Asheville storm damage page for roof and tree damage. To see everything else we handle, return to our Asheville cleanup crew.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will my homeowners policy pay for river flooding?

Usually not. Rising water is typically covered under a separate flood policy.

How long does a flooded house take to dry?

It depends on the materials and how much was removed. We'll give you daily readings so you can see progress.

Can I start mucking out myself?

If it's safe, yes, with boots, gloves and eye protection. Photograph everything first.

Wet floors or a dripping ceiling?

Call and tell us what happened. We'll talk it through and book a visit.
